Israeli-Born Canadian Tennis Player Wins Boys’ Singles Wimbledon Cup

Denis Shapovalov was born in Tel Aviv, Israel, but his family moved to Canada when he was only 9 months old.

He started playing tennis when he was 5 with his mother, Tessa, as his coach.

When Shapovalov was 12, his mother opened the TessaTennis Program in Vaughan, Ont., a two-court facility that includes a junior development program.

Shapovalov’s mother continued to be his coach until he was 13 — and still helps him — but his main coach is Adriano Fuorivia, who is here with him.

Shapovalov, a 17-year-old from Richmond Hill, Ont., becomes only the second Canadian to win a boys’ championship at a Grand Slam event.
