The Bubble

By Devin Heroux

It’s called “The Bubble” around here – I know why. Tel Aviv is a city that never sleeps… where there is always a place to grab a coffee, eat a meal, or have a party. The pulse on the streets is obvious. It’s my kind of city.

And despite the fact that a war is only an hour and a half away from a cappuccino, it doesn’t matter here. The theme of present moment living seeps into the every being of these people. There is life to celebrate. And as much as I think many people live in Tel Aviv for an escape, there is also the understanding that outside of this bubble there are people in Israel that don’t have the luxuries found in the paradise that is Tel Aviv.

There’s this mix of old meets new, and when these two worlds collide you get this intense amalgamation of culture. I’m big on energy, and the second I got into Tel Aviv I felt like this could be home… it’s been a continual assurance throughout my stay here.

For example, today I was walking around Jaffa and was passing by a very organic, hippy-looking store. Part of me wanted to just keep walking, but something told me to stop in the store. Inside, I felt like I was back in any store on Broadway in Saskatoon. I started talking to the owner (Naomi) about the feeling I had being in the store – she asked where I was from. Saskatchewan. She was shocked, and I was about to be.

Apparently Naomi’s mother is living in Regina, and comes back to Tel Aviv to live with her. I mean, what are the chances? But that’s what this has been about, this whole trip; this feeling of being so far from home, but feeling right at home.

Sure, I’m a dreamer and a lover and I get carried away with emotions, but I can say with a lot of conviction that Israel has not seen the last of me.
